VallE d'Aosta Snow and avalanche bulletin

Winter 2022-2023

The eighteenth edition of the report describes the progress of the 2022/2023 snow season, which was characterised by considerable snow and weather variability, both spatially and temporally observed, caused by rapid weather variations, the diversified distribution of snowfall, both in terms of area and altitude, and the countless wind episodes that in many cases accompanied the precipitation.

All this led to periods with precarious conditions in terms of snow stability, which resulted in numerous accidents, with the number of avalanche victims bringing the winter of 2022-23 to third place among those with the most deaths in Aosta Valley since 1986. 15 accidents were recorded during the season, with 26 people swept away, 4 injured and 8 killed.

A total of 249 avalanches were recorded during the season, 21 of which were never recorded in the land register, 47 with events larger than ever observed.
