VallE d'Aosta Snow and avalanche bulletin

Winter 2019-2020

The fifteenth edition of the report describes the progress of the 2019/2020 snow season, in the period between the first significant snowfall in early November until mid-May, when the snowpack melted.

During this winter season, in general, a lot of snow was recorded in late autumn and December, little in January and the second part of March, even less in April. There were long phases of high pressure in spring, a lot of wind and rain at high altitudes, and a tailspin in May, with snow in the middle and high mountains, to close the season.

A significant statistic of the winter 2019/2020 concerns the number of avalanche accidents. Last winter there were fewer deaths in avalanches in Italy than in the previous seven years. This fact is not due to the pandemic situation, as it might seem: the main reasons for the annual increase or decrease in accidents, in fact, are always related to the stable snow conditions. For most of the season, the snowpack had stable conditions; the three fatal accidents in Valle d'Aosta involved very experienced skiers and ski mountaineers and, in two cases, the ski mountaineers were alone.
