VallE d'Aosta Snow and avalanche bulletin

Winter 2023-2024

The nineteenth edition of the report describes the progress of the 2023/2024 snow season. A season characterized by excellent snowfall above 2000 m, a great variability of snow and weather conditions, temperatures above the historical average and numerous spontaneous avalanches observed.

The abundance of snow characterizes the western and northern sectors throughout the season, in the rest of the Region the snow on the ground remains below the historical average until mid-February. Everything changes in March when a series of heavy snowfalls rebalance the snow cover, bringing it, even in the south-eastern sector, to values above the historical average until late spring.

There are many moments of instability but of short duration, mostly concomitant with snowfall, rain on snow and temperature fluctuations

The most critical period of the season is precisely in March, in particular the first ten days, when large quantities of fresh snow fall. The valleys most affected are those of Gran Paradiso and the Lys valley. Numerous avalanches have been observed and some of which interrupt traffic. The local avalanche commissions are continuously engaged in monitoring the snow and weather conditions and controlling the sections of road potentially affected by avalanches.

During the season, 447 avalanches were recorded, of which 11 were never registered in the register, 38 with events larger than ever observed, while 13 avalanche accidents were recorded in the Aosta Valley, one of which in September.
